This week, 26 schools will be serving meals in their canteens made with locally sourced produce, thereby reducing emissions

4,000 schoolchildren from 26 schools in Fuenlabrada are marking World Food Day this week with a ‘Meal for the Climate’ made with seasonal pulses and vegetables from the Fuenlabrada Agricultural Park, where production generates low emissions.

This initiative, organised by the City Council through the Department of Sustainability, Environment and Public Space, aims to promote responsible, healthy and environmentally friendly consumption habits, whilst highlighting the role that food plays in the fight against climate change.

Throughout the week, school canteens will offer sustainable menus, made with local produce, most of which comes from the Fuenlabrada Agricultural Park, such as chard, spring onions, chickpeas, lettuce and cabbage, all of which are in season.

“This initiative aims to raise awareness amongst children and their families that what we eat every day has a direct impact on the planet and can make a positive contribution to combating climate change,” explains Soledad Martín, Councillor for Sustainability and the Environment.

The Agricultural Park, in coordination with schools and catering companies, is responsible for organising the logistics. In addition, schools are provided with teaching materials for use in the classroom.

Fuenlabrada Town
Council takes part in this event every year as part of its commitment to promoting a food system that is fairer, healthier and more environmentally friendly.
