  2. Local Police awareness campaign on distractions at the wheel

Distractions are a contributing factor in 30 per cent of fatal accidents

Between 5 and 11 October, the Fuenlabrada Local Police are joining the nationwide campaign organised by the Traffic Directorate on the use of mobile phones whilst driving and other distractions at the wheel.

Driving whilst talking on a mobile phone held in the hand, smoking, using a sat-nav or any other electronic device are common factors in 30 per cent of fatal road accidents. For example, dialling a number on a mobile phone whilst driving can increase the risk of a road traffic accident by a factor of 12.

The aim of this campaign is to reduce the number of accidents caused by these factors. It also seeks to provide first-hand information on the serious consequences these distractions can entail, as well as to create a sense of constant monitoring of this type of offence.

“We are trying to reduce the number of accidents caused by these distractions by making it clear to drivers that talking on a mobile phone whilst holding it in your hand, as well as using sat-navs or smoking whilst driving, can be a matter of life and death,” said Cristina Mora, the councillor responsible for safety.

As well as raising awareness, officers will pay particular attention to these offences and issue fines to those who commit them. The fine for using a mobile phone whilst driving, holding it in one’s hand, is 200 euros and results in the loss of 6 points on one’s driving licence.
