Work began in July and will continue for nine months

Council, through the Department for Sustainability, the Environment and Public Spaces, launched a programme of works in July to improve the town’s children’s play areas, which includes improvements to 14 play areas for boys and girls.

With a budget of 920,000 euros and a nine-month timeframe, one of the objectives of this project is to provide shade in six of these play areas which currently lack it. 

Some play areas will undergo a complete refurbishment, involving the installation or replacement of rubber flooring and the modernisation of play equipment. Others will be repurposed, being converted into bio-healthy play areas or spaces for teenagers. In all cases, accessibility and inclusivity will also be improved, broadening their range of use.

The aim is to adapt these areas to the needs of the neighbourhoods. For example, ‘bio-healthy’ zones will be created in some of them. Furthermore, one of the most innovative projects will take place in El Vivero, transforming the area on Calle Madroño into a ninja circuit with features aimed at pre-teens and teenagers. This is the first time a space of this kind has been created in the city.

“This is a major investment, the primary aim of which is to provide shaded areas in those children’s play areas that previously lacked sufficient shade, so that our children can use them safely all year round,” explained Mayor Javier Ayala, who emphasised that the investment will be used to adapt some of these spaces to the needs of each neighbourhood’s residents.

Work is currently underway in two areas of Miraflores Park, renovating the children’s play equipment and the rubber flooring in one of them; once that work is complete, the other area will be converted into a health and fitness zone.
